National Trails Day June 4

Kentucky State Parks will participate in National Trails Day on June 4 and free fishing weekend June 4-5, with events across the state to recognize the excellent hiking and fishing opportunities at state parks. Buckhorn Lake State Resort Park, Buckhorn will host Hook and Hike Day. Planned activities include a Kids Fishing Derby for kids ages 15 and under, a session on orienteering and a hike of the 1 1/2 mile gradually sloping Moonshine Holler Trail. Davisson receives Horatio Alger Scholarship

Megan Davisson of Manchester will receive the prestigious 2016 Horatio Alger Honeywell Scholarship. She attends the University of Kentucky, where she studies Biosystems engineering. This annual scholarship recognizes outstanding students, who, in the face of great adversity, have exhibited an admirable commitment to pursuing their college degree in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM).

Clay Residents Recognized as Outstanding Students

Six Clay Countians have earned a high level of academic distinction at Alice Lloyd College for the 2016 Spring Semester. Makayla Hubbard of Manchester, and Katelyn White of Manchester was named to the Dean’s Distinguished List for receiving a grade point average of 3.75-3.99 (based on a 4.0 scale). Students named to the Dean’s List for achieving a grade point average of 3.25-3.74 were Lani Muncy of Manchester, Lesley Roberts of Manchester, Cody Smith of Manchester, and Charles White of Manchester.

Free Fishing Weekend, June 4-5

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources will celebrate Free Fishing Weekend June 4-5, when no license is required to fish Kentucky waters. Redbird Ranger District Kid’s Fishing Derby, Little Double Creek Pond, located behind office at 91 Peabody Road, Big Creek, Ky.. Fishing from 9 a.m. to noon. Registration from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Open to ages 5-15. There will be prizes for various age divisions. Food and drinks will be provided to participants. Pond has special stocking of trout. Anglers should bring their own bait and fishing equipment. The pond is located in the Redbird District of the Daniel Boone National Forest, due east of London off KY 66.
