Clay adds 448 to labor force

Clay County added 448 workers to the labor force to 5,983 and the number of employed workers increased by 551 to 5,485. 103 less people are unemployed dropping the unemployment rate from 10.9% to 8.3% between May 2016 and May 2017, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training, an agency of the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.

Murder

A former Big Creek resident is scheduled to be sentenced in September in Leslie Circuit Court by Circuit Judge Oscar Gayle House for the second time for a 1999 Leslie County double murder. Donald Rolin Phillips (AKA Don Rowland), age 57, of Hyden was found guilty in the shooting deaths of Osa Lee Maggard and Geneve Young and sentenced to life imprisonment with parole for 25 years but the Sixth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals reversed the sentence in March.

Phone Scams

Phone scammers are at it again. Jackson Energy officials says co-op members have reported receiving phone calls telling them their electricity will be disconnected unless they pay their bill immediately over the phone with a debit, credit or prepaid card. Combs says if you receive a call from someone claiming to be with Jackson Energy and demanding immediate payment, hang up. If you have any questions or concerns about phone calls you receive, contact Jackson Energy at 1-800-262-7480. Beware and don’t fall victim to phone scams.
