Couple get in Knife Fight

Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Deputy Shawn Boroviak arrested Timothy Huff, age 43 and Mary Huff, age 40, off Tom Town Hollow Road after Boroviak investigated a domestic dispute where allegedly a husband and wife were involved in a domestic dispute where both individuals received cuts from a knife during the altercation. Both were transported to Baptist Healthcare Center in Corbin and received stitches. Timothy Huff, age 43 and Mary Huff, age 40 were charged with assault (second degree) (domestic violence) and lodged in the Laurel County detention Center.

Clay food and shelter program

Clay County has been chosen to receive $8335.00 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. The selection was made by a National Board. A Local Board will determine how the funds awarded to Clay County are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service organizations in the area. The Local Board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds available under this phase of the program.

Castle gives false name when caught shoplifting

Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Deputy Daniel Grigsby with Sgt. Robbie Grimes and Deputy Kyle Gray arrested Allery Castle, age 20 of Campground Apartments (Corbin) at Campground court, after Castle was charged with identity theft after she had been arrested July 21 at Walmart in southern Laurel County in reference to shoplifting. Castle used the name of a family member when arrested, and signed court paperwork for bond with the family member’s name.

Thompson Given 30-year Sentence in Abuse Case

A Clay County jury has recommended a 30-year sentence for Phillip Thompson for assault and abuse charges against a four-year-old child. The mother of the child, Amber Willoughby, who has a younger child with Thompson, was sentenced to five years after entering a guilty plea on an amended charge.

UNITE’s Service Corps Help Increase Math Scores

Through Operation UNITE’s “Too Good for Drugs” program, test scores increased 43 percent for drug prevention knowledge and 30 percent in math for students in third through fifth grades. The curricula served 1,573 students in 42 schools within 13 school districts this past year through the UNITE Service Corps (AmeriCorps) initiative.

Doctor Killed in Motorcycle Wreck

A pediatrics doctor, who works at Manchester Memorial Hospital was killed after she crashed a motorcycle, head-on, into a truck on Friday according to the Kentucky State Police. The crash happened around 2:30 PM Friday. Patricia Burke, age 55, of London was driving a black Harley Davidson through Hughes Hill on KY-11 in Knox County, when she made her way around a curve, crossed the center line, into the path of a Ford F-250.

Jackson County Treasurer Under Investigation

In a special meeting of the Fiscal Court, Jackson County Treasurer Beth Sallee was suspended with pay pending a Kentucky State Police investigation into possible fraudulent activity according to our sister publication “The Jackson County Sun”. Unable to discuss the details of the ongoing investigation, the fiscal court appointed Shay Hacker as “temporary” Treasurer while the KSP investigation works toward its conclusions.
