Spring turkey hunting

Spring turkey hunting is slipping into position before daybreak and sitting still as the sun eases over the hills. It is breaking the silence with a call and getting a response that sends a shock of excitement down your spine. It is coaxing a love-struck gobbler closer and keeping your wits as it struts into range. In Kentucky, the 2017 season is right around the corner. Hunters ages 15 and younger are first up. The youth-only season is the weekend of April 1-2. The general statewide season opens April 15 and runs through May 7.

Sweet Memories

Richie Farmer played in five consecutive state tournaments – the first player to do so – and scored a record 317 points. He also holds the Sweet Sixteen record for career field goals (127), and shares the record for most three-pointers (9) in a game. But his proudest achievement was helping Bobby Keith’s Tigers win the 1987 state title. Farmer clearly recalls how his record-setting Sweet Sixteen career began in Rupp Arena 33 years ago this week. Clay County had a big lead on Owensboro in their first-round game when Farmer, an eighth-grader, took the floor with 1:08 remaining and hit a little 12-footer in the lane with :05 left.

Peak of float-and-fly fishing

Although we’ve seen many warm fronts this winter with temperatures in the 60s just this past weekend, the water in our highland reservoirs is still cold. Water temperatures are in the high 40s in Lake Cumberland, Dale Hollow and Laurel River Lake. Once water temperatures drop below 50 degrees for extended periods, threadfin shad begin to suffer from the cold water.
