5-year-old critical after Martins Creek accident

A five-year-old boy was critically injured Monday afternoon when the vehicle he was in crashed into a concrete bridge headwall and ended on its top in Martins Creek.

According to Kentucky State Police, Matthew Stewart, five of Manchester, was flown from the scene to the University of Kentucky Medical Center Pediatrics ICU where he is listed in critical condition.

The accident occurred at approximately 4 p. m. on KY 1524, Brightshade Road.

Police said the driver of the 1996 Chevrolet Lumina, Tony Gray, 41 of Manchester, was charged with DUI, no insurance, booster seat not in use and endangering the welfare of a minor.

Brandon Stewart. 23 of Manchester, was also a passenger in the vehicle.

Bill Warren of Warren’s Wrecker Service said that when he arrived at the scene he could see where the car had hit the headwall and had broken it.

He was told by witnesses that a UPS driver had stopped right after the accident, and pushed on the child’s stomach until he started coughing up water and blood. He then started breathing.

Trooper Matt Ridener is the investigating officer. Clay EMS and members of the Brightshade Fire Department assisted him at the scene.
