Rawlings & Goin's storage building caught fire late Thursday night in downtown Manchester.

Fire departments from all over the county along with the Laurel County Fire Department worked until morning hours to put the fire out, which sources indicate started in the ceiling of the building. The downtown street was closed off until early Friday morning.

Christmas Bazaar and Tree Lighting Sees Good Turnout

The City of Manchester held it’s first ever Christmas Bazaar and Tree Lighting ceremony Saturday in downtown Manchester.

Local vendors set up shop inside city hall, where they sold goods and local residents could shop at home.

“The vendors I talked to said they did really well and after the Kentucky game, there was a steady flow of people in and out of city hall into the night,” said Mayor George Saylor.

CCMS Hosts Fall Folk Life Festival

Eighth grade students Andrew Roark and Aaron Smith played dulcimer and guitars together at the CCMS Gymnasium Friday as part of the Middle School’s Folk Life Festival. See story, A-2.

The Clay County Middle School hosted its Fall Folk Life Festival Friday at the CCMS Gymnasium.

Middle School students wore elf hats and participated in different class instructions that showcased the talents of Appalachian folk art through story performances, basket weaving, and art displays.

Fayette Coroner Investigates Clay Woman’s Death

A woman is dead after an automobile accident at the Chat Branch curve on South Highway 421 Saturday.

Officials are investigating the cause of death.

Mary Williams, 40, of Manchester, passed away at the UK Medical Center. Williams was flown from the Manchester Memorial Hospital after the accident, according to police. The cause of death in this case is pending a toxicology report, say officials.

Council Votes 3 to 3

Mayor Breaks Tie to Make City Non-Smoking

The Manchester City Council met Wednesday and the city was officially made smoke-free in a final vote.

The ordinance reads that “to protect the public health and welfare by prohibiting smoking in public places and places of employment to guarantee the right of nonsmokers to breath smoke-free air, and to recognize that the public’s need to breathe smoke-free air should have priority over the individual’s desire to smoke”.
