In the Tigers’ season opener Friday night, Clay County overcame a two-point first quarter deficit for a 66-50 victory.

The Tigers held Centennial to 28 percent shooting on the night, while forcing 14 turnovers.

After the sluggish first quarter, Clay County recovered in the second, outscoring the visitors 18-12 for a 28-24 halftime lead.

Tenacious third quarter defense limited Centennial to only seven third quarter points, while the Tigers poured in 17, giving the home squad a commanding lead through three.

The double-digit lead was too much to overcome for the visiting team, giving Coach Marcum his first victory as head coach.

Senior Matthew Mitchell paced the Tigers with 23 points and eight rebounds.  Allen Whitaker poured in 15 points, all three-pointers, off the bench, as Adam Gay recorded his first double-double of the year with 11 points and 12 rebounds.  JV Hooker chipped in seven points, while Zach McGeorge added three points.  Codi Roberts, Josh England, and Brandon Word netted two points apiece, as Steven Wagers rounded out the scoring with one additional point.

Seniors Matt Mitchell and Codi Roberts combined for 23 of the Tigers’ 24 first quarter points.

But the Clay County offense wasn’t the only cylinder firing, as the Tiger defense held Eastmoor to 0-13 shooting from beyond the arc.

For the game, Mitchell led all scorers with 25 points, while Roberts poured in 18.  Allen Whitaker had another good night shooting off the bench with 11 points, all in the second half.  Adam Gay recorded eight points, while Steven Wagers and Zach McGeorge pitched in four points apiece.  JV Hooker had a quiet night with three points, as Stephon Lyttle and Josh England rounded out the scoring with two and one points, respectively.
