The wait is over, and this weekend marks the beginning of another Clay County Tiger basketball season.
Second-year Head Coach Robert Marcum leads the Tigers to an opening weekend that’s sure to be filled with excitement, as the Tigers host the Big Red Shoot-Out.
“This event is an honor to host every year,” said Coach Marcum, “William ‘Big Red’ Campbell was a legend here, and I have many special memories of him and his legacy. Hosting a Shoot-Out in his honor is a privilege for us this weekend. His accomplishments, time and effort that he put into the Clay County sports programs will never be forgotten.”

Coach Denver Word’s eighth grade squad snapped a two-game losing skid to win their first game of the year.
Coach Word emptied his bench with the game well in hand in the second half, as every Raider player saw action in the win.
Wes Wolfe led the charge with a game-high 20 points, 12 coming in the first quarter. Blake Smith had a nice outing with 14 points, while Phillip Mitchell and Ty Lyttle finished with six. Billy Wilson rounded out the scoring with five points in the win.
North Laurel 41
The seventh grade Raiders remain undefeated on the year at 3-0 after downing North Laurel.
Coach Jimmy Dezarn’s Raiders had three different players in double-figures, led by Trevor Sams with 22 points. Will Sexton poured in 11, while Tyler Fields finished with 10. Logan Gabbard added eight points, as John Sizemore rounded out the scoring with two points in the win.
The Raiders return to action Thursday, traveling to Knox County. Next Friday the Raiders return home to host Lexington Catholic.

Coach JD Smith’s Tigers opened the night with a disappointing 61-47 loss to border rival Jackson County, but bounced back in the second game, defeating Bell County 43-35.
Sam Carr led the freshmen squad in their opening game loss to Jackson County with 17 points. Corey Robinson netted 11, while Ryan Holland finished with seven. Zach Hicks chipped in six points, as Travis Mills and Robert Smith rounded out the scoring with four and two points, respectively.
Clay County had a more balanced scoring attack in their eight-point win over Bell County, led by Carr with 11 points.
Holland finished with nine, Robinson added eight, Mills pitched in seven, Hicks had six, and Smith added two points in the win.
The freshmen squad returns to action Thursday on the road at South Laurel, scheduled for 7 PM. Monday night, the Tiger freshmen play host to Middlesboro, scheduled to begin at 6.

Clay Squads Win Over Bell in Final Tune-Up Game

Manchester – Both the Clay County Tiger and Lady Tiger basketball teams were victorious Tuesday night against visiting Bell County in each team’s final preseason scrimmage game.
In the opening game of the night, Coach James “Ivy” Burchell’s Lady Tigers dominated the inside game, leading to double-doubles from pivots Cheyenne Madden and Morgan Chesnut, leading to a 58-52 win over their region foe.
The Lady Tigers jumped out to a nine-point lead in the early goings of the first quarter, but the Lady Bobcats were able to knock down some jumpers to cut the Clay lead to four by the end of the first, 16-12.
Coach Burchell’s squad struggled with their outside shooting throughout the game, leading to a few transition baskets for Bell.
Senior guard Alisha Mitchell knocked down a three-pointer late in the second to give the Lady Tigers a 28-22 lead to end the first half.

The Lady Tigers dominated the first half, winning 40-28, ending the scrimmage with a 77-68 win.
“They played man in the first half against us, and we dominated the game,” said Coach Burchell, “We struggled a little against their zone in the second however.”
