Tip Leads to Three Meth Arrests

An anonymous tip that meth was being cooked at a Bowling Street home in Manchester led to three arrests Tuesday.

An unknown caller phoned Kentucky State Police Post 11 in London to complain about an ether-like odor issuing from a residence.

KSP Trooper Josh Wilson went to investigate at the residence and noticed a strong ether-like odor. After knocking on the door, he says a woman answered it and the smell became noticeably stronger.

Wilson says that Brenda Wagers, 40, was in a utility room in the house. When she opened the door to exit the room, a fog of smoke bellowed out.

Wilson evacuated the people from the house. With help from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and the Manchester City Police, the house was searched. Manchester Police Officer Jason Combs discovered a one-step active methamphetamine lab in the utility room, which was being cooked inside a mason jar.

Trooper Wilson explains that the chemical reaction that occurs in the manufacturing of meth creates oxygen. When manufactured in a plastic container, the plastic either melts or expands.

“Glass cannot expand, so when the oxygen levels build, it can only explode, sending shrapnel everywhere,” said Wilson. The area around the home was evacuated until Officer Combs could disassemble the lab.

Terry Bowling, 45, Gary D. Bowling, 21, and Brenda Wagers, 40, were all charged with manufacturing methamphetamine.

The three had to be decontaminated at the scene before being taken to the Clay County Detention Center.

Trooper Wilson is in charge of the investigation. He was assisted by Manchester Police Department, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, and the Manchester Fire Department.
