Well folks, fall is here

Well folks, fall is here now and it’s getting a little bit cooler, but we’ve had a hot dry summer. As I’ve always said, the good Lord knows what’s best for us.
We had a good singing Saturday night, everyone enjoyed the singing. The Roots Branch Church will be having Homecoming Day  September 9 starting at 12. Everyone is welcome to come, so come on out and fellowship with us. There will be singing after the meal.
A lot of folks are still sick and in need of prayer: Waymon and Joyce Mills, Edgar Lawson, Delbert Collins, Geraldine “Boots” Smith, Buran Gregory, Von Minton, and James Brown. Remember the ones that have lost a loved one this past week. Our prayers go out to the Carpenter family that lost a mother and grandmother. May the good Lord stay close to you all.
I heard that the preacher, John R. James passed away, he lived in London. I knew him well and that he was a good preacher to all the families that lost a loved one. You have our deepest sympathy, may God Bless.
I don’t have any birthdays this week.
The grandbaby sure makes a lot of noise on the banjo and guitar and he’s learning fast. It’s fun to watch him as he tries to play and he enjoys playing.
I want to say hello to our good friends way up Virginia way, the Pelfreys and Smiths. I want to thank everyone who reads my little write up and for the ones who call.

Stable Rocks got name from Civil War

Well folks, I’m sorry I didn’t write my column last week. I was sick again. Sometimes, things happen. Thanks for calling me; I’m sorry I didn’t get to put it in last week.
I’m glad that it has cooled down some. It’s like fall is here, the crickets are hollering now. I believe that we will have an early fall.
The green beans are sure growing and we should have green beans in a week or two. Some people have already called and wanted some.
The sweet potatoes sure are growing. The tomatoes, most of them have rotted, too much rain on them, but we can’t control the weather. The good Lord knows what we need.
The grand baby is growing up so fast. He plays the strings of the banjo and guitar, he is a sight.
Happy birthday wishes go out to Landon McDanial, Jerry Wayne Dinson, and happy belated birthday wishes go out to Paula Rominger. She is 29 and holding. So to all of you, may the good Lord grant you all to have many more.
I got a call a few days ago from Jimmy Burchell. He wanted to know about who owned the place called the Stable Rock. The Stable Rocks are close to where Clay County, Knox County and Laurel County join together, but the Stable Rocks are in Clay County. My grand mother told me why they named it the Stable Rocks. She said back in the Civil War that the soldiers would camp out there and in the rocks they would hide their horses and there were draw-bars to keep their horses in. There is also a big hollowed-out spring on top of one of the big rocks. When I was a little boy growing up, a bunch of the boys in the neighborhood would go hide eggs there at Easter time. I remember one time, me and some of the boys found an old cannon ball at the rocks and that’s how the rocks got its name, “The Stable Rocks”.
Well, some folks are still sick. Waymon and Joyce Mills, Edgar Lawson, Von Minton, and Delbert Collins, so pray for these folks.

Remembering when

Well folks, seems like that we today are living in fast times. The days, weeks and months are passing by so swiftly.
School will be starting again in almost a week. When I was a boy, when school started we got excited. We got a pencil and a tablet and a new shirt and overalls. That is where we could put our pencil.
We didn’t have any toys, but if you had a few marbles you were rich. At school, the boys would draw a round circle in the dirt. Then we would put five or ten marbles in the circle and we would take turns shooting out the marbles. The ones that you could shoot out, you got to keep them. Every boy had a special marble that they kept to shoot out the marbles, and they called it the tall marble. Whatever happened to the marbles? Some times you would have a pocket full and some times not any. We would always be trading marbles.
I remember one time a man came to our house and he gave us boys a big jar full and we were tickled to death to get them. Today, children get so much that they don’t appreciate it. We didn’t have big red wagons or bicycles to play with. We had homemade sleds and wagons. Today, the older kids have dirt bikes and 4-wheelers. Children today have too much.
I remember the boys would make popguns you could shoot paper wads with, or dogwood berries or spicewood berries too. We had a lot of fun too. We made slingshots. When we were boys, if you could find a red innertube they were better than the black ones. We would find a good set of forks and we would take mother’s scissors and cut the inner tubs in stripes about 14 inches long and about one inch wide and we would shoot snakes and lizard and we got good at shooting the sling shots.
We didn’t have much, but we made do with what we had.
Well, the grandbaby got a haircut and he likes getting his haircut and he likes taking a bath and he talks like a grown up. The kids today are so smart. He’s beginning to count and saying his ABCs and I can’t hardly write my column for him wanting my pen and paper to draw pictures on it. He is a handful.
Happy birthday wishes go out this week to Zach Hicks, he will be 16 years old on August 2. He is the son of James and Kim Hicks. Zach plays basketball for the Clay County Tigers. We are proud of him. Also happy birthday to Diana Williams up Somerset way, Linda Sue Hubbard and Chase Whitis, he is the grandson of Harley and Norma Lee Sibert. So to you all, have the best birthday and may God Bless you all to have many more, from all your friends and family.

Grandbaby, grass, and weeds are all growing

Well folks, I’m sorry I didn’t get to put my write-up in the paper last week. I was very sick and wasn’t able to drive. Sometime things happen, but I’m getting a little better now.
We have had plenty of rain lately and the grass and weeds sure have grown up. You can’t keep up with the mowing and weed eating around the place.
Grandbaby sure is growing up so fast and getting into everything. It keeps me busy keeping up with him. We had a good singing Saturday night and everyone had a good time. The grandbaby likes playing the banjo and guitar. You should hear him sing. Everyone he meets likes him and he likes everybody too.
In our garden, most of the beans and corn have dried up where we didn’t get rain. Maybe the late corn and beans will be better. I hope so.
Happy anniversary wishes go out to J. Hugh and Freda Smith way up in Liberty, IND and J. Hugh is having a birthday too. May God bless you to have many more. Happy belated birthday to Sarah Sibert and Traci Gregory. Harley and Norma Lee Sibert will celebrate their anniversary Friday the 27th. We wish for them many more anniversaries, may the good Lord bless you all, from all the families and friends.
