That New Pants Smell

Well school has started and I guess a lot of kids are excited about going. When I was a child I got excited when school started. We would get a notebook and a pencil and some times we would get a pair of Big Ben over-alls. The boys would put the pencils in the bib of the over-alls. The new pants had a new smell to them. Today you can buy a new pair of pants, and they don’t have that new smell to them. I wonder what they do to them to take the new smell away.
Today the kids have so much. We had to walk to school and take our lunch with us. The kids today get free food. We never did get any food when we went to school. So the kids today get everything, school buses run. What if they had to walk three miles one way, I wonder how many kids would walk six miles a day to go to school. Not many! When I grew up on White’s Branch most of the roads were in the little Creek and when it rained a lot we had to walk around the banks so we wouldn’t get too wet. Today the school buses run too most of the people’s houses. The good Lord knows what we need.
Today people take a lot of things for granted, my brother called me from Liberty and said they haven’t had rain in 6 or 7 weeks up there. He said it was hot and dry up there. So people, we are blessed here. We have rain about every week here. We should be thankful.
Remember all the sick people Denver Smith, Wayman and Joyce Mills, Edgan Lawson, Roscoe Bryant also. Melinda Shoups, many others that are sick. Pray for the ones in the hospital, the ones in the nursing homes.
I saw in the paper that our hospital here in Clay County is going to add on. We sure need more here in Clay County and we need good roads to travel on. Look at the off roads in Laurel County, about every on is black topped. I wonder where our tax money is going not much going to the roads. The roads on Roots Branch are in bad shape and on White’s Branch too. Here in Clay County they need to have people to cut the trees and bushes off of the roads. Some places they are almost growed together. We need bridges on Roots Branch to. Maybe our county Judge will fix them before winter, I sure hope he will. Hot Times

Well folks we got another good rain, the Lord provides for us the things we need. We’ve had hot weather the last few weeks, but it’s a lot hotter during the day in Texas. Now they have had hot weather with 100-degree days for the past 29 days straight, so we can’t compare much.

Some time we have trouble but if we look around we can find some one worse off than we are. The days and weeks are so sweetly passing and it want be long until fall will be here and then winter time. Our county schools will be starting this week, lets look out for the children. We can’t be too careful, the little ones will run out in front of you, so be extra careful and not hurt the children.

Our roads up here on Roots Branch sure need repairing some places are so narrow and they need widening out. It’s pitiful for the big buses to have to travel on them. In some places you meet the bus you have to back up about a mile before the bus can pass. Our county needs better roads, the county judge needs to get out and travel on the roads and he can see that they need fixing. You can have a good bus and about 6 or 8 months they will be shaking all to pieces, or the big hales will break the springs on them. Maybe they will fix them this year.

Some folks are sick and in need of prayer, Edgan Lawson, Wayman and Joyce Mills, Rosco Bryant also Johnny and Lynda Shoupes, daughter Melinda, so pray for them. There are so many that are sick, remember the ones that are in the nursing homes, hospitals and the ones that are at home, remember all the churches.

I’d like to say hello to my friends, the Pelfrey’s and the Smith’s. The late garden is growing good, the gourds have big gourds on them and the pumpkins are doing good, its good to have a big garden. The grand baby is growing up to fast he is talking and a lot of words you can understand. He likes sweet corn and tomatoes and cucumbers. He is a hand full and he likes his guitar. It’s so much joy to watch him around the house and farm.

I saw two of my friends I used to work with Saturday Rosco Bryant and Ronnie Corum. We talked about the things we used to do and about going to church. The Lord is so good to us all. The Lord Knows What We Need

Well folks, we are having plenty of hot weather here in July. When its 95 and 98 degrees, some states are having hot dry weather too, but we have got some rain here. My brother, who lives in Liberty 2^nd, called me today. He said they hadn’t got any rain for a month, he said it was a bad day up there. We here in Clay County have been blessed with a lot of things we take for granted in life, but the good Lord knows what we need.

The grandbaby in growing up so fast, he’s getting into everything, and he’s talking some words you can understand. He sure likes guitars and gospel music too. I take him to church and Sunday school. He goes with me to feed the chickens and helps me hatch the eggs. He is a sight.

I planted pumpkins, squash, and gourds. The gourds are climbing up bushes and the vines are running everywhere. Maybe I can raise some. It sure is a big job around here on the farm, mowing the yard and the fields, and keeping the weeds out of the garden. Some folks say its to hot to work, but I get out early in the morning and late in the evening, and when it gets real hot to go to the house!

Some people are sick and in need of prayer. Waynan and Joyce Miler, Edgar Loundan, Shirley Jones, Shade Minton, Shade’s Brother John Thomas Minton, and Wilson’s great nephew, a little baby who has heart trouble. So pray for all of these people. Remember the Frank Hyde family and the Harris Family and all who have lost a loved one this past week. So many each week. Pray for all the Churches. Pray for the ones in the hospitals and the Nursing homes.

Happy Anniversaries go out this week to Harley and Norma Lee Sibert and may God bless you to have many more. You both are special people. From all the family and friends. Happy Birthday wishes go out to Traci Gregory up Michigan way. Also Diana Williams “little Liley” I call her, up Eubank way and Linda Sue Hubbard. Also Zach Hicks will be 15 years young and he’s got a girlfriend, and plays football and basketball in Clay Co. So to you all, may God bless you all to have many more birthdays.

Well folks I want to thank everyone for reading my column each week, and for all of you who get the paper from out of county and state. I want to tell you all I truly appreciate you.

Getting Some Dirt on My Hands

The weekends for me are busy, going to reunions and to singings and to church but to enjoy working for the lord. Once a man told me he didn’t have time to go to church, and those that don’t have the time to go, they will take the time to die. You know we all have choices in life, and though many make the wrong choices. Choose the lord and make the right choice. A lot of people are sick and in need of prayer. Wayman and Joyce Mills, Edgar Laweon and Paul Jackson. Pray for the ones that are in the nursing homes, the ones that are in the hospitals and remember the ones that have lost a loved one in the past week. In tome of sickness and death, the good lord is a friend in time of troubles. I’d like to say hello to my friends up in Lynchburg, Virginia, the Peffreys and the Smiths. They truly are my good friends. So many people tell me that they enjoy reading my little column each week. A lot of them are from out of state. I thank you all so much. Well the great grand baby is rowing up fast, some words he says you can understand and I take him to church and he takes his little guitar with him. If we don’t teach our children and grand children about the lord, who will?
Well the garden is coming along good. The gourds are blooming and the big pumpkins are too. I like working in the garden and getting some dirt on my hands.
I’ll tell you its hard work raising a big garden, but there’s nothing like going to the garden and getting tomatoes, corn, beans, cabbage, cucumbers, potatoes, onions, lettuce and mustard. The sweet potatoes are growing so fast. I planted 2,200 sweet potato plants. The late beans and sweet corn are up and I’ve plowed them out. I guess I have planted about 3 acres in the Garden this year. 2 guess I can say that I raise a big garden. I keep busy around the farm. There’s something to do all the time.

I saw a lot of friends Saturday, down at the park where the family reunion of Oakley and Dora Minton was, the family reunion was in honor of there parents. A good time was had.

Upper Horse Creek Happenings 7-14-11

Well folks enjoy summer time, it want be long until fall and then winter. Seems like the days and weeks are flying by. Well we got to go camping and fishing this past week. We went to Woods Creek Lake and it is so beautiful there. We got our water from that lake. You can ride boats for miles and miles, and the water was so clean, It always good to see God’s creation. You know that God made everything to see the pretty flowers blooming and the big trees. There were good campsites on the shore with plenty of shade trees. There were a lot of people out camping and fishing and some were riding their boats. Its good to get a little R and R once in a while.

The Roots Branch Church will be having a monthly singing this Saturday night starting at 7 PM. The Cheek Family will be there, everyone is welcome to attend. There will not be any Sunday school or preaching Sunday morning, due to the cemetery meeting, but there will be Sunday night service. Frieda Smith will be celebrating their Anniversary July 18, we wish you many more. Sarah Sibert will be celebrating her birthday on July 18, so may God bless you to have many more.

Our roads up Roots Branch need repairing and ditching before winter comes. I hope the county will fix them. They did a good job mowing the roads. The garden is coming along pretty good. The gourds are running like crazy and the big pumpkins are growing. It’s amazing to watch things grow.

The cemetery meeting will be at Mill Creek starting at 11 o’clock. Well folks I’ll stop for this time. Again I thank you for reading my little column each week. So many call me and tell me they enjoy reading it.
