Four copperhead snakes already

Well folks, I’m sorry for not getting my write up last week in the paper. Sometimes, we get caught up and not able to do all the things we need to do. Thank you all for calling me about it.
We sure are having summer time weather now, 92º already and it’s still May. We sure been busy the last week mowing and working the garden and weed eating. You can’t keep the grass cut, it grows so fast.
A lot of folks ask me about the garden. It’s coming along good this week. The good Lord’s will, I’ll get new cabbage, onions, pears, lettuce, and mustard from the garden soon. The beans are running. We set out all the sweet potato plants, 2700 of them, and the potatoes are blooming and in a week or two I’ll be able to get new potatoes. There is a lot of work, growing a garden, but it’s so good to get fresh veggies out of the garden.
I want to thank the McQueen family down on Sacker for giving me the tobacco plants. I’ve already planted them and plowed them. As I’ve always said, it’s good to have friends. The reason I planted the tobacco is we twist the tobacco to chew. I don’t use the chemicals on the tobacco or spray the tobacco, it’s like the old-timers use to do.
I’ve planted the watermelons and muskmelons and the big pumpkins. Everything is coming along real well, so I’ve been pretty busy. I’ve killed four copper head snakes already this year, so be careful around the place mowing or weed eating or out in the garden.
We got the grandbaby and took him to church. He sure likes going. Boy, he’s talking so much now, and he’s as bright as a penny and he don’t forget anything. You should hear him on the banjo and the guitar. He’s trying to make the chords already. The people at church gets tickled at him picking and patting his feet and trying to sing. Taking your children or grandchildren to Sunday school and church will make a difference in their lives. People, it’s what you teach them when they are young and growing up. Just a thought. Try it, they might like it.

Monday was Decoration Day and a lot of people were putting flowers on their loved one’s graves, and that is good that we still remember them.

The Big Two

Well folks, it’s raining today but I’ve worked out the gardens Saturday while it was dry. I fixed some more sweet potatoes, ground, and Lord’s willing, I’m going to set them out soon. As I’ve said, I like farming and raising the gardens.
A lot of people tell me they read my column each week. I saw Brian Gregory down at the Hima post office and he talked about the garden. Thanks Brian for reading my write up. The grandbaby will be celebrating his birthday this week. He will be the big 2 years old. The boys are coming up to play music for him. The banjo player, the dobro player, and the bass player. As I’ve said, he’s music minded and I’m thankful for that.
He went to Sunday school and church Sunday. I take him every weekend. The Roots Branch Church will be having a singing this Saturday night starting at 7:00 PM. Everyone is welcome to attend.
The clan went fishing again this past week, and we caught a cooler full. I enjoy fishing and catching the fish.
I want to say hello to the Smiths and Pelfreys way up Virginia way. They are true friends. I hope all are well. I want to thank all of you for reading my little write up every week. Some are calls telling me they enjoy reading the paper.
Happy birthday wishes go out this week to Gearldene Boots Smith. She has been a good true friend to me all these years. You never forget the kind things people do for you. So Boots, from all of us, we hope you have the best birthday ever and may the good Lord bless you to have many more.
The grandbaby will be the big 2 Thursday and we are planning a party for him. He is a sight. We took him down at the park Saturday afternoon to play. He had a wonderful time on the slides and swings.
I want to thank the city for fixing all the things for the children, the playground, and all the things for the kids. There were children everywhere at the park and they were having a good time. It’s good that we have things for our children to play on.

Boy, do they have teeth!

Well, we are having warm weather now. Time seems like to be flying by, this is the fifth month and another month and the year will be half gone. We got plenty of rain Friday night and you can’t keep the grass cut. There is always something to do here at this place, but we got a little R & R last week.
We went fishing over at Cumberland River. We had a good time and we caught a lot of fish. I caught my first walleye. Boy, do they have teeth! You can see a lot of things on the wild river deer, turkey, geese, ducks, and eagles too. We saw bear tracks in the mud on the river bank. Last year, we saw wild goats and we saw the big fishing cranes. You can see so much out in the wild.
We had the grandbaby again this week and he is a sight getting into everything. He will be having his birthday next week, the 17th. He will be the big 2. He sure is smart. He talks like a grownup. Granny gets after him with the fly swat and he runs to me. He likes going to Sunday school and church.

There will be a baby shower at the Rawlings and Stinson Park for Brandie Smith, Saturday May 12 starting at 12 o’clock and it’s a boy.

Growing like a week and talking up a storm

Well folks, I’m glad we are having warm weather again. Everything is growing and the grass sure is. It keeps one busy mowing. I have to mow the yard twice a week. The garden is coming along real good. I’ve plowed the potatoes this past week and I’ll have to plow and hoe the beans this week. The onions are big enough to eat, the cabbage are beginning to make heads, and the sweet potato plants are getting big enough to set out.
As I said before, it keeps you busy raising a garden, but I like raising one. The sweet corn is up, we’ve planted peaches and cream ambrosia and merit and other kinds too. Boy has the price for seed and fertilizer gone up. It costs a lot of money to raise a big garden.
Today we hear of so much things happening. It was sad to hear about Jimbo Lyttle passing. Our prayers go out to all the family. He was always a kind and helpful person and so was his sister, Becky Stivers. She helped me many times. As I’ve said, it’s good to have good friends. The saying is if you want friends, be a good friend.
A lot of people are sick and in need of prayers. Denver Smith is at home now. He had surgery and was in the hospital for a couple of weeks and he is doing a little better. Norma Lee Sibert fell and hurt herself the other day when it was raining. She never broke any bones, but bruised herself. Remember Waymon and Joyce Mills, Edgar Lawson, and Ora Henson. So folks pray for these people.
The grand baby is growing like a weed and talking up a storm. We took him to Wal-Mart and we had to get him a rod and reel. He is ready to go fishing. We keep him on the weekends and take him to church. On Saturday he wears me out. If I work in the garden, he has to have a hoe too. Every step I take, he’s with me. He sure likes the outdoors. The preacher at the church was bragging on him for being a good boy. I’m trying to teach him the good things that a child should know. So many people don’t take their children or grand children to Sunday school or church, but they should, it sure won’t hurt them.
