Upper Horse Creek Happenings

A blackberry winter

Well folks, I thought spring was here, but today it’s a cold and dreary day. I sure hope it warms up soon. One day it’s 70º or 80º, the next day it’s 50º, but we had an early spring this year. Someone said it was a blackberry winter. It’s sure cold here now anyways.
The garden is coming along good. The potatoes are up and I guess I will plow them this Wednesday. I’ve already worked the onions, peas, and cabbages. The beans and sweet corn are up, it won’t be long until the cabbage will be heading. I like to work in the garden.
We had the grandbaby this weekend and he’s growing up so fast. He sure is a handful and hard to keep up with. He wants me to ride him on the tractors and everything. When he gets into trouble, he runs to me for help, and I take care of him. He wants to help me. He went with me to gather the eggs. He likes to hear the rooster crow, and he crows back to the old rooster. He is a sight. He gets into everything. He likes the barn and he gets my tools and scatters them all over the barn.
Some people are still sick; Denver Smith, Waymon and Joyce Mills, Edgar Lawson, and Orie Henson. So many people are sick and need prayer, so pray for them, the ones in the hospital and the nursing homes.
I want to wish Kenny and Mollie Smith a happy belated birthday. May God bless you all to have many more. Also Faith Allen and Charlie Collins, Lana Smith and Morgan Hubbard.
I’d like to say hello to the Smiths and Pilfreys way up Virginia way, they are good friends and to Daugh and Lucy Pearl Gregory way up Michigan way. So many people get the Enterprise out of state, they keep up with what’s happening here in Clay County, and that is good. The staff is so good at the Enterprise and that is the way people should be.
Well, on the news they say that the oil prices are coming down, the gas prices are not. I wonder why. Just a thought
Well, our roads up here on Roots Branch are still in bad shape, they sure need fixing. I sure hope our judge will fix them.
I want to thank everyone that gets the paper and the ones that read my little write-up. So many people call me every week telling me they look for the write-ups. Boy, it’s good to be living here in Clay County. Some states have got snow this morning like Ohio and Pennsylvania. We sure have been blessed this past winter and spring.
Well, I’ll stop for this week. May the good Lord bless and keep you and God bless America and may He forever hold you in His hands.

Boy have things changed

Well folks, we’ve had some big frost this past week and there was ice too. The fruit trees that had bloomed got killed and a lot of flowers were in bloom got killed too. Some people said they had tomatoes planted. Well, they got killed too. It was a pretty hard freeze. I had some potatoes coming up and the frost bit them off, but potatoes will come back up.
We had an early spring this year and most of the trees had already bloomed out. Maybe it will stay warmed up now, I sure hope so.
Some people are still sick, Waymon and Joyce Mills, Edgar Lawson, and Denver Smith, so pray for them. Remember the ones in the hospital, the nursing homes, and the ones that have lost a loved one this pass week.
There will be the monthly singing at the Roots Branch Church starting at 7:00 PM. Every one is welcome to attend.
Boy have things changed over the years. I remember when gas was 17¢ a gallon. Now some gas station’s have over $5 a gallon. The oil companies are getting richer. Something should be done. Prices may come down as the election gets closer, just a thought. The roads up on Roots Branch need some work done on them and on the bridges too.
My friend, Gary Gregory, was busy Saturday. He was cutting trees and cleaning up the campground down at Hima. Not many people in his position would work like he does. I helped him just a little. He told me he needed the exercise. It’s good to have friends.
Well, it’s getting time to go fishing but I have plenty of work to do around the place putting out the garden, mowing, and weed eating. I’m lucky because I’ve got a little helper, the grand baby. He sure likes the outside, but he’s hard to keep up with. He is a sight. He likes going to Sunday school and church.
I want to thank everyone for reading my little column and thanks to the Enterprise for helping me. May the good Lord bless and keep you, and God bless America and may He forever hold you in His hands.

Easter has come and gone

Well, Easter has come and gone and I guess a lot of eggs were hidden for the children. We had a big bunch at our house and the kids had a good time playing and riding toys. A lot of eggs were hidden. A lot of prize eggs too, and the grand baby had a time filling up his basket. He had it full! Some of the eggs had five dollars in them. He found $12 in change in his eggs and a lot of candy.
He likes the outside and he likes going to the barn where he can look at the weed eaters, chainsaws and the lawn mowers. He scatters my wrenches, hammers, and tools all over the barn. You can’t watch him, he gets into everything, but that’s alright. He’s just a child and I let him get away with too much. I’ve spoiled him big time.
We went to Sunday school and church today and we had a good time. A lot of people don’t go to church. Some say they don’t have time, but they should take time to go.
We have had allergies and colds here at our house, but we are getting better now.
Remember all the sick, Denver Smith, Waymon and Joyce Mills, Edgar Lawson, Harley Sibert, Amy Harris, and Orie Henson. So many people that need prayer. Remember the ones in the hospital, the nursing homes, and all the families that lost a loved one this week.
The Lord is so good to us. Well, I’ll stop for now. May the good Lord bless and keep you and God bless America and may He forever hold you in His hands.

Trials, Sickness, and Troubles

Well folks, I’m sorry for not putting my write up in the paper last week, my wife was sick. Sometimes we have trials, sickness, and troubles, but my wife is getting better now. We want to thank you all for your prayers and for the ones that came to the hospital to see her and for the ones that called. I want to thank the staff at the Enterprise and Rodney Miller who called about my column. It’s always good to know that someone misses you. Well, it’s spring time for sure, as the grass is growing so fast. I’ve mowed the lawn three times already. Some of the trees are blooming, the Red Buds and Dogwoods and the flowers are so pretty. You know it’s such a blessing just to see God’s creations, the things he has made. Well, the garden is coming along pretty well. I’ve planted potatoes, onions, cabbage, and peas, and we fixed the sweet potato bed and got them out. Some people say that they can’t find anything to do around the house, but I sure can. There’s always something to do around the place here. So many people are still sick. Edgar Lawson, Waymon and Joyce Mills, Harley Sibert, Junior Mills, Ora Henson, and Denver Smith. So pray for these folks. We got the grandbaby the past week, he sure is a handful, getting into everything. Happy belated birthdays go out to Payton Bess Garrison, Lucy Peal Gregory, Lee Hicks, and Riley Chandler Broughton. May God bless you all to have many more. Happy anniversaries go out to Daugh and Lucy Pearl Gregory up Michigan way. May the good Lord bless you two to have many more. Well, I’ll stop for this time. May the good Lord bless and keep you and may He forever hold you in His hands.

Time Went Forward Once Again

Well folks, the time went forward one hour again, and by the time we get used to it, it will be changed back. They should leave it alone. It sure has been pretty and warm and the butterflys have been everywhere today. This kind of weather I like.
Well, it’s time to be planting some garden things. Cabbage, onions, potatoes, peas, mustard and lettuce. It sure is good to get out of the house and enjoy the beautiful sunshine and warm weather once again. We should always be thankful for what the good Lord gives us.
So many people are still sick and in need of prayers. George Blair, Edgar Lawson, Waymon and Joyce Mills, Brother Hacker, Von Minton, Ora Henson, Amy Harris, and Tina Sheets. So pray for these folks. Harley Sibert is doing better and James Brown is better. God still answers prayers.
Some folks are having birthdays this week. Teresa Hoskins had a birthday on Sunday, March 11. Caleb Wilson’s was March 12 and Kayden Hubbard will be 1 on Saturday, also Stephen Centers. So to all of you, may you all have the best birthday ever and may you be blessed to have many more.
Let’s remember Fabian Wilson’s family. To all of you that sent out a flower or said a prayer and the ones that brought food or helped in any way, to the ones that sang the songs and the preachers that preached, Brother Landon McDanials and Brother Bobby Tenny. We want to thank Evelyn Dezarn and the Horse Creek Fire Department, the Clay County Ambulance Service, the Coroner, and the Britton Funeral Home. From all the Wilson family, thanks and may God bless you all for the kindness that was shown.
We had the grand baby for this weekend and boy is he a handful. You should see him as he tries to play the guitar and the banjo. I believe he will be a good player one of these days. I sure hope so, he sure is interested, all he talks about is the guitar and banjo.
Well, I’ll stop for this time. Thank you all for reading my little write up, I sure do appreciate you all. May God Bless and keep you, and may He forever hold you in His hands.
