Sweet potatoes still growing

Well folks, fall is here now and it won’t be long until we will be having frost. We have had plenty of rain lately, but it has cooled down and the leaves are falling. We have had a hot summer too.
We had a good homecoming today, plenty of good food and beautiful singing. I saw a good friend last week, Rosco Bryant, he was riding his motorcycle. He said he was a great grandfather too.
The garden is almost gone now, but the sweet potatoes are pretty good and still growing and the good Lords willing, I’ll start harvesting things the last of this month, so if you want any, put your order in now. Phone is 598-6348. I have Oakley Homer Red and the Golden Nuggets and Puerto Rico. I don’t have any white ones I couldn’t find any plants.
The grandbaby is sure growing up fast. He likes playing the banjo and guitar. He is a big handful and hard to keep up with. He likes to be outside. He and I caught a big bullfrog and we turned it loose in the pond. He likes feeding the fish. I take him to Sunday school and church and he likes to go, everyone loves him. You should hear him singing. I took him yesterday to a big fish fry and they had blue grass gospel singing and he loved playing and singing. Everyone had a good time.
Some folks are still sick: Waymon and Joyce Mills, Edgar Lawson, Delbert Collins and Charlie Collins, so pray for these people. Remember the ones in the hospital, the nursing homes and the ones that have lost a loved one and pray for the leaders of our country.
There will be a community meeting at the Horse Creek Holiness Church on October 15 at 1 p.m. It’s about keeping the Hima Post Office open, so to everyone in this community, come out and support this. You know they are taking all the little post offices away from us; it’s time for us all to take a stand for what’s right. We all slept when they took prayers out of the schools.

"Boy, how things have changed since I was a boy."

Boy, how things have changed since I was a boy. Growing up, I remember going to school, we walked to school, and when we got home after school we had plenty of work to do on the farm like cutting wood, milking the cows, feeding the hogs and gathering eggs. It was about the same every evening, working in the garden. Today the kids don’t know what work is. I remember the first car I ever owned. I worked for it but we never had any toys as children today have so much.
The Roots Branch Church will be having Homecoming September 9 starting at 12 p.m. Be making plans to come, everyone is welcome. I don’t have any birthdays this week.
Some folks are still sick and in need of prayer: Waymon and Joyce Mills, Edgar Lawson, James Brown, Ray Brown had a tractor accident and is in the Lexington Hospital, and Delbert Collins. Remember the ones in the hospitals, the nursing homes and the ones that have lost a loved one, so pray for them folks.
Clay County Days will be here this weekend, so be careful and be safe.
Boy the gas prices haven’t gone down any. Everything keeps going up. The weather is still hot and we need some rain.
I want to thank the staff at the Enterprise for helping me with my little write up. They are so good.

Well folks, fall is here

Well folks, fall is here now and it’s getting a little bit cooler, but we’ve had a hot dry summer. As I’ve always said, the good Lord knows what’s best for us.
We had a good singing Saturday night, everyone enjoyed the singing. The Roots Branch Church will be having Homecoming Day  September 9 starting at 12. Everyone is welcome to come, so come on out and fellowship with us. There will be singing after the meal.
A lot of folks are still sick and in need of prayer: Waymon and Joyce Mills, Edgar Lawson, Delbert Collins, Geraldine “Boots” Smith, Buran Gregory, Von Minton, and James Brown. Remember the ones that have lost a loved one this past week. Our prayers go out to the Carpenter family that lost a mother and grandmother. May the good Lord stay close to you all.
I heard that the preacher, John R. James passed away, he lived in London. I knew him well and that he was a good preacher to all the families that lost a loved one. You have our deepest sympathy, may God Bless.

The grandbaby sure makes a lot of noise on the banjo and guitar and he’s learning fast. It’s fun to watch him as he tries to play and he enjoys playing.

Stable Rocks got name from Civil War

Well folks, I’m sorry I didn’t write my column last week. I was sick again. Sometimes, things happen. Thanks for calling me; I’m sorry I didn’t get to put it in last week.
I’m glad that it has cooled down some. It’s like fall is here, the crickets are hollering now. I believe that we will have an early fall.
The green beans are sure growing and we should have green beans in a week or two. Some people have already called and wanted some.
The sweet potatoes sure are growing. The tomatoes, most of them have rotted, too much rain on them, but we can’t control the weather. The good Lord knows what we need.
The grand baby is growing up so fast. He plays the strings of the banjo and guitar, he is a sight.
Happy birthday wishes go out to Landon McDanial, Jerry Wayne Dinson, and happy belated birthday wishes go out to Paula Rominger. She is 29 and holding. So to all of you, may the good Lord grant you all to have many more.
I got a call a few days ago from Jimmy Burchell. He wanted to know about who owned the place called the Stable Rock. The Stable Rocks are close to where Clay County, Knox County and Laurel County join together, but the Stable Rocks are in Clay County. My grand mother told me why they named it the Stable Rocks. She said back in the Civil War that the soldiers would camp out there and in the rocks they would hide their horses and there were draw-bars to keep their horses in. There is also a big hollowed-out spring on top of one of the big rocks. When I was a little boy growing up, a bunch of the boys in the neighborhood would go hide eggs there at Easter time. I remember one time, me and some of the boys found an old cannon ball at the rocks and that’s how the rocks got its name, “The Stable Rocks”.
