Remembering when

Well folks, seems like that we today are living in fast times. The days, weeks and months are passing by so swiftly.
School will be starting again in almost a week. When I was a boy, when school started we got excited. We got a pencil and a tablet and a new shirt and overalls. That is where we could put our pencil.
We didn’t have any toys, but if you had a few marbles you were rich. At school, the boys would draw a round circle in the dirt. Then we would put five or ten marbles in the circle and we would take turns shooting out the marbles. The ones that you could shoot out, you got to keep them. Every boy had a special marble that they kept to shoot out the marbles, and they called it the tall marble. Whatever happened to the marbles? Some times you would have a pocket full and some times not any. We would always be trading marbles.
I remember one time a man came to our house and he gave us boys a big jar full and we were tickled to death to get them. Today, children get so much that they don’t appreciate it. We didn’t have big red wagons or bicycles to play with. We had homemade sleds and wagons. Today, the older kids have dirt bikes and 4-wheelers. Children today have too much.
I remember the boys would make popguns you could shoot paper wads with, or dogwood berries or spicewood berries too. We had a lot of fun too. We made slingshots. When we were boys, if you could find a red innertube they were better than the black ones. We would find a good set of forks and we would take mother’s scissors and cut the inner tubs in stripes about 14 inches long and about one inch wide and we would shoot snakes and lizard and we got good at shooting the sling shots.
We didn’t have much, but we made do with what we had.
Well, the grandbaby got a haircut and he likes getting his haircut and he likes taking a bath and he talks like a grown up. The kids today are so smart. He’s beginning to count and saying his ABCs and I can’t hardly write my column for him wanting my pen and paper to draw pictures on it. He is a handful.
Happy birthday wishes go out this week to Zach Hicks, he will be 16 years old on August 2. He is the son of James and Kim Hicks. Zach plays basketball for the Clay County Tigers. We are proud of him. Also happy birthday to Diana Williams up Somerset way, Linda Sue Hubbard and Chase Whitis, he is the grandson of Harley and Norma Lee Sibert. So to you all, have the best birthday and may God Bless you all to have many more, from all your friends and family.
Some folks are still sick and need prayer. Edgar Lawson Waymon and Joyce Mills, Delbert Collins, and Von Minton. Remember the ones in the hospital, the nursing homes, and the ones that have lost a loved one this past week.

Grandbaby, grass, and weeds are all growing

Well folks, I’m sorry I didn’t get to put my write-up in the paper last week. I was very sick and wasn’t able to drive. Sometime things happen, but I’m getting a little better now.
We have had plenty of rain lately and the grass and weeds sure have grown up. You can’t keep up with the mowing and weed eating around the place.
Grandbaby sure is growing up so fast and getting into everything. It keeps me busy keeping up with him. We had a good singing Saturday night and everyone had a good time. The grandbaby likes playing the banjo and guitar. You should hear him sing. Everyone he meets likes him and he likes everybody too.
In our garden, most of the beans and corn have dried up where we didn’t get rain. Maybe the late corn and beans will be better. I hope so.
Happy anniversary wishes go out to J. Hugh and Freda Smith way up in Liberty, IND and J. Hugh is having a birthday too. May God bless you to have many more. Happy belated birthday to Sarah Sibert and Traci Gregory. Harley and Norma Lee Sibert will celebrate their anniversary Friday the 27th. We wish for them many more anniversaries, may the good Lord bless you all, from all the families and friends.
Remember all the sick, Waymon and Joyce Mills, Edgar Lawson, and Delbert Collins. Pray for the ones in the hospital and nursing homes and for all who lost a loved one this week. We all need prayer.

“Grandboy sure is growing”
I’m sure glad that we are getting a break from the heat and we got some rain and we really needed it. It was so dry, the creeks all dried up. But the good Lord knows what we need.
The grandboy sure is growing up so fast. He makes friends with everybody he meets. He is a sight. Granny gets after him with a flyswat and he comes running to me for help. He likes going to Sunday school and church. The children most of the time follow after the things their parents teach them and do the things they do. People need to teach their children about the Lord and take them to Sunday school and church. We hear every week about our young people passing from this life, and it’s getting worse. There is a better way for them, and Jesus is that way.
So many folks still sick: Waymon and Joyce Mills, Edgar Lawson, Delbert Collins, James Gregory and Sammie Ray Gregory. So pray for them. Also, Brenda Hicks need prayer. Don’t forget to pray for all the ones that have lost a loved one this past week. Remember the ones in the family and nursing home.
There will be a graveyard meeting Sunday at the Mill Creek Cemetery starting at 11 a.m. Everyone is welcome to come.

Roads on Root Branch need work

Well folks, it’s still hot and dry and we need rain. The gardens are drying up and the yards will almost burn. You talk about hot, it’s been hot the last week, 105º and here it was 109º. It’s hard to believe.
The water here in the little branches have dried up. Maybe we will get some rain this coming week. I sure hope so, the beans are turning yellow and the sweet corn is twisting-up it’s so dry.
Some folks are sick and need prayer: Delbert Collins, Edgar Lawson, and Waymon and Joyce Mills. So pray for them. Remember the ones that have lost a loved one this past week: The Arlie Rhodes family, the Edd Brock family, and the Spurlock family. So many each week, so pray for them too.
I want to thank the staff at the Enterprise for all they do for me. They are so helpful, and for all who read my write up. So many call and tell me they do. I want to thank Judy down at the Enterprise. She has made the grandbaby her friend. He doesn’t forget anything. When I get the pen and paper and he sees me, he says “Judy papa.” He’s smart to be two years old, he plays the banjo and the guitar, and he loves going to Sunday school and church.
I don’t have any birthdays this week.
Our roads up here on Roots Branch needs patching and the bushes need to be cut-off. I hope our county judge will do that for us before winter sets in.

"It's hot and dry" - "We need rain bad."

Well folks, its still hot and dry here at our place and we need rain bad. Congratulations go out to Dalia Smith Harr. She will be going to veterinarian school. She is the daughter of Kenny and Rene Smith and the grand daughter of Boots Smith. I know you will do good in school, Dalia. Boots and I go back a long way. We went to school together at the little one room school at Whites Branch. The schoolhouse is still standing and its in good shape and they have church in it, not many are left. It’s an old landmark and when you pass the schoolhouse, it brings back many memories.
Folks, the decendents of Charlie and Delia Bennard Minton and William Gregory and Mary Brown Gregory family will be Saturday June the 30 starting at 11:00 a.m. at the Beech Creek Park. Everyone come out.
Happy birthday wishes go out this week to Demetrius Allen and Daugh Wesley Sizemore, Christy Wright, and Alisha Natalie Gregory and Madison Gregory. These two are Daugh and Lucy Pearl Gregory grandkids, so we wish for you all the best birthdays and God bless you all to have many more.
The grandboy sure is growing up so fast and we take him every Sunday to Sunday school and church. This past week, the mail man brought him a big package and it was from our friends the Pelfreys way up Virginia way. Sarah, that was so good of you to get the things for him. He gets the book and he brings it to me to read it for him and he wore his little outfit to church today. I’m trying my best to bring him up the right way. He is a handsome little fellow and everybody loves him, he is so friendly, and in church he acts like a grown up. Folks, it’s how you teach them.
The beans are almost ready to pick and they are good white half runner beans if you want any call 598-7812.
Here is a picture of a great grandson. He is growing and doing good, his parents are Adam and Brandie Smith. He’s two weeks old and he’s got as much hair as I do and he’s a cute little fellow.
