The View from Burning Springs

Stressed Spelled Backwards is Desserts

I would like to wish a happy birthday to two of my best friends. Happy birthday to Linda Hensley and Ann Sibert on September 3rd. I hope you both have wonderful days!

Happy 10th birthday to Blake Mills on September 1st. Blake is the son of Darrell and Kay Mills.

Happy birthday to Katie Anderson on September 5th. Birthday wishes go out to Rachel Hensley on September 7th.

Happy 6th birthday to Kennedy Allen on September 6th. Kennedy is the daughter of Jeff and Tracy Allen.

In Macedonia Baptist Church news, we had 109 kids for our first night of Team Kids! That was definitely a good number for our first night back. Team Kids will be every Wednesday evening from 6:00 pm until 7:15. There are classes for kids aged preschool through high school.

Each Wednesday night there are Bible lessons, games and food. If you need the bus to pick you up, you can call the church at 598-5518. We look forward to seeing you there.

I haven't made it into Rockin Cakes yet, but I have been fortunate enough to eat some of their cupcakes. Thanks to Ted Woods for bringing a box full to a couple of our C.C.H.S. site base meetings. There were chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, lemon and strawberry to name a few and they were delicious. Darn...now everyone will want to be on site-base next year. Anyway, it's nice to see some new independently owned businesses popping up downtown.

I will close on a few sweet notes: “Stressed spelled backwards is desserts. Coincidence? I think not!” - Author Unknown.

“Life is uncertain. Eat dessert first.” - Ernestine Ulmer.

“Seize the moment. Remember all those women on the Titanic who waved off the dessert cart.” - Erma Bombeck.

If we all put “eat something sweet” on our daily to-do list, I bet we could each mark off at least one item completed each day! Have a good week!

Weekend Was a Busy One

Weekend Was a Busy One

This past weekend was a busy one what with Jarrett coming home from his summer job just to turn around and head out to U.K. a couple of days later. Rachel was off to Transylvania University a couple of days after that. I'm just happy to have them in the same city!

Happy 18th birthday to Clint Smith on August 27th. Clint is the son of Mark and Amy Smith. He will be attending school at the University of Pikeville this fall.

Happy 8th birthday to Tayton Baker, son of Mike and Linda Baker, on August 28th.

Mr. Mike Gregory is our new principal at C.C.H.S. now and I'm sure we all wish the best to him and the staff and students at Clay County High School. A good high school is an important part of the community so let's all work together to make ours the best in the region!

Shade and Kristy Smith both have birthdays this week. Shade's is on the 28th and Kristy's is on the 31st. Happy birthday to both of you.

Macedonia Baptist Church will be having revival services August 28th through August 31st. Services will be on Sunday at 11:00 am and 6:00 pm, Monday evening at 7:00 pm, Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm and Wednesday evening at 6:00 pm.

Bro. Kenneth Felty will be the evangelist. Special singing for the Sunday morning service is Kevin Rice and his band. The Letterbox Boys will be singing on Monday night. Wednesday night will feature Voice of Praise.

Sunday morning, the 28th will be high attendance Sunday in Sunday School. Sunday School begins at 10:00 am. We have classes for every age group, for women, men and couples. Come out and join us if you can.

In other church news, the youth of our church enjoyed a movie before church this past Sunday night. “Soul Surfer” was shown in the gym before our Sunday evening service.

Happy birthday to Amanda Lunsford on August 26th. Susan Sibert and Jayme Turner have birthdays on the 28th. Happy birthday to Sharon Bray and Brandi Bray on the 29th. My cousin, Becky Rice, has a birthday on the 30th.

I'll close with this thought. We talk a lot about the pursuit of happiness, but maybe the pursuit should begin inside ourselves. Samuel Johnson had this to say, “He who has so little knowledge of human nature as to seek happiness by changing anything but his own disposition will waste his life in fruitless efforts.” Have a good week!

August is a Time for Newness

By the time this comes out in the paper, preschool classes will be in session for four year olds. It's fun to see their excitement as they learn new things and make new friends, but it's also a little sad to see how fast they grow. Of course, I'm on the other end of the spectrum as I'll be sending my two oldest off to college next week. The ages and the schools may change, but the sentiment is always the same.

I would like to wish a happy anniversary to Mike and Daylene Hensley on August 19th. I hope you two have a wonderful day.

In Macedonia Baptist Church news, Team Kids begins on Wednesday, August 24th at 6:00 pm. There will be classes for kids aged preschool through high school. Each Wednesday night there will be Bible lessons, games and a snack. Come out and enjoy the fun!

Bro. Kenneth Felty will be the speaker for our Revival services beginning on Sunday, August 28th and running through Wednesday, August 31st. August 28th will also be high attendance for Sunday School. Join us for Sunday School. You are sure to find a class that you would enjoy and feel comfortable in. We have classes for men, women, couples, college aged, teens, and children of all ages.

August is a time of newness. It's a new school year. It's a fresh start and an excellent time to try new things. Maybe you could shake up your surroundings with some paint, material and duck tape (seriously, I just discovered zebra duck tape!) Perhaps you could start journaling, learn a new language (I keep promising myself I will learn Spanish), write short stories, build something (like a bookshelf for all those classics you're stockpiling to read in the future) or learn something new (wouldn't it be nice to know what all those coils and parts under your car's hood really do?!?)

Sometimes it doesn't even have to be a big change that gets us going on a new path. I'll close with this, “Jumping at several small opportunities may get us there more quickly than waiting for one big one to come along.” - Hugh Allen. Have a good week!

Education at it's Best Creates a Love for Learning

It's been a busy week for teachers, students and parents as the school year kicked off on the 3rd. Education at its best creates a love for learning. Martin H. Fischer said, “All the world is a laboratory to the inquiring mind.”

Bro. Charlie Goodman will be on WTBK the rest of this week. Jason Root will be on the week of August 15th through the 19th. Bro. Frank Peters is scheduled for the week of August 22nd.

Bro. Kenneth Felty will be the evangelist for the Revival coming up at Macedonia Baptist Church. Services will be August 28th through the 31st.

Team Kids will be starting up again at Macedonia Baptist Church on August 24th at 6:00 pm. There will be classes for kids aged preschool though high school.

Happy anniversary to David and Jayme Turner on August 15th. Darrell Wayne and Stephanie Hoskins have an anniversary coming up on August 16th.

I was reminded I had missed some important dates, which sometimes happens with me. Mike and Tammy Hunley celebrated their 20th anniversary on July 26th.

Happy birthday to Brody Hooker, son of Brian and Kendra Hooker. His birthday was on August 8th. Bryan Samples also celebrated a birthday on the 8th. Birthday wishes go out to Yvonne Westerfield on August 11th. Rita Whitis and Tina Sandlin have birthdays on the 14th. Mark Smith, Andrew Jarvis and William Hugh Hudson have birthdays on the 16th.

Best wishes to Ryan Napier and Kari Cotton. They were married last Friday night in a fairytale like setting on the deck of the new community center. Everything was beautifully done with a variety of flowers and greenery, purses made of moss for the bridesmaids and fairy wings for the flower girls. After a wedding trip to Charleston, the couple will reside in Louisville, Kentucky.

I'll close with another quote about learning: “You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives.” - Clay P. Bedford. Have a good week!

Full House and Celebrations

My oldest son, Jarrett, celebrated his 21st birthday on July 28th. He is working away from home this summer through a University of Kentucky co-op program. We are looking forward to celebrating with him, albeit late, when he gets back home.

Tyler Hensley celebrated his birthday the next day, on the 29th. Daylene Hensley and Eddie Marcum both had birthdays on the 31st. Layla Allen, daughter of Jeff and Tracy Allen, turned three on July 31st.

In Macedonia Baptist Church news, we had a full house on July 10th when we were doubly blessed during our music service. Kevin Rice and his band led our song service and provided special music. Next, the Chad's Hope Men's Choir took the stage and sang a special. Jan Hoskins sang a special during our evening service. We certainly had a good day all around.

Saturday, the 16th, the Ladies Fellowship group enjoyed a day of shopping and lunch in Richmond and then wound up the day watching the Gospel Jubilee show at Renfro Valley. This past Sunday, the 17th, was our 5th Sunday Fellowship meal in place of the evening service. If you don't have a home church, consider this your invitation to come visit at Macedonia.

In August birthdays, Rebecca Owens celebrated a birthday on August 1st. Happy 7th birthday to Hannah Lewis, also on the 1st. Birthday wishes went out to Dorothy Hale and Robert Baker on the 2nd.

Happy 17th birthday to Kristen Frost, daughter of Jeff and Myra Frost, on August 4th. Happy 6th birthday to Kyra Reid, daughter of Kevin and Kim Reid, on August 5th. Wanda Reid also has a birthday on the 5th. Virgia White celebrates a birthday on August 7th. Cheryl Marcum and Mallory Garrison share a birthday on August 9th.

If you have any birthdays, anniversaries or announcements for this column, please email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Thanks!

In anniversaries, Tim and Brandi Bray celebrated their anniversary on July 30th. Mark and Amy Smith celebrated their anniversary on the 26th. I would like to wish a happy anniversary to Doug and Teresa Jarvis on August 6th.

The car show put on by the Clay County Cruisers was at the park Sunday before last and there were some beautiful rides to look at and lots of friendly folks to talk to. Of course, when you get a bunch of people together with a shared passion, it's easy to get to know one another. It would be worth your while to come check out some of the awesome cars and trucks from around the area.

While my mind is on cars and such, I'll close with some humorous quotes about driving. “It takes 8,460 bolts to assemble an automobile, and one nut to scatter it all over the road.” - Author Unknown. “When buying a used car, punch the buttons on the radio. If all the stations are rock and roll, there's a good chance the transmission is shot.: - Larry Lujack. “For every “Drive Safely” sign, shouldn't there be a “Resume Normal Driving” sign?” - Robert Brault. Have a good week!
