Bessie S. Bowling

Bessie S. Bowling, 89, passed away on March 12, 2011, just two weeks prior to her 90th birthday.

Bessie was born on the family farm in Clay County, Kentucky to Louise and George Smith. Bowling was preceded in death by her sister Nina Blair, and brothers Curtis, Burgan and Elmer Smith. Her husband of 54 years, Charlie Bowling, died in 2002.

Bessie attended Cumberland College and started teaching “grade school” in a 2- room school house during WWII. She later finished her degree at Eastern State College. During her 39 year career she influenced many students who also became teachers.

After retirement Bessie was an active member of the Manchester Library Committee, the Retired Teachers Association of Kentucky and the Homemakers’ Club of the County Extension Office. She also supported the Lockards Creek Fire Station.

In addition to teaching, Bessie was the wife of a farmer. She spent many hours helping Charlie with the livestock and large garden. She enjoyed canning the homegrown vegetables. As a country cook, she was well known for making chicken and dumplings.

Bessie was a member of Muddy Gap Baptist Church, where she was honored several years as the oldest mother in the congregation. She spent hours reading her Bible and often said, “The important thing is to be ready to go.”

Bessie is survived by her beloved son, Roy Glenn, his wife, Ann, and three cherished grandchildren, Mark, Chad and Laura. She is also survived by brothers Delbert and Elbert Smith, many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and friends.

The family wishes to thank the many family members and caregivers for their loving care and support during this long journey. Bessie also found a happy home the last year of her life at Nazareth Home in Louisville where she was treated with love and respect.

Memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Association.
