James P. Bishop

Major James P. Bishop 95, Indianapolis, he was born on January 18, 1916 in Teges, KY to Bryce and Esther (Combs) Bishop, who preceded him in death and died on June 30, 2011. After serving in WWII, he spent 28 years with the Indiana State Board of Health as a Public Health Sanitarian. He served a total of 30 years in the military and retired from the Army Reserve. He is survived by his sister, Mildred (Bishop) Byrd; his brother Steve; 3 sons, Bob (Mila), Ron (Dala), and Gerald (Imelda) and grand-children, Jeremy, Brett, Bryce, Blair, Daniel, David, and Gregory. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie (Kaelin), son Charles; 5 brothers and 2 sisters. He graduated high school from the the Oneida Baptist Institute and college from the University of Louisville. He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge in Oneida, KY. He was a Life Member of the VFW and the Indiana Association of Sanitarians, holding the title of Sanitarian Emeritus. He was a kind, generous, and brave man who served our country well in WWII, including the Battle of the Bulge. During critical times in WWII, he commanded the unit guarding General Omar Bradley's headquarters. He was with the 526th Armored Infantry Battalion. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2011 in Fountain Square Mortuary, 1420 E. Prospect St., Indianapolis, IN 46203. A committal service will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the Crown Hill Cemetery Peace Chapel.

Sandra Gail Jones

Sandra Gail Jones, 68, of Horse Creek, passed away Thursday at the U.K. Medical Center in Lexington.

Funeral services for Sandra Gail Jones were Held on Monday at 1:00 p.m. at The Britton Funeral Home Chapel With Robert Mason and Youel Napier officiating.  Burial followed at The Jones Cemetery at Hima.

Ruth Helton

Mrs. Ruth Helton, age 76 of Big Creek passed away Monday, June 20th, 2011 at the Hyden Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hyden, Kentucky.  She was born February 22nd, 1935 in Leslie County, Kentucky to the union of Felix and Sally Ann Sizemore Carmack.  She was a homemaker.

She is preceded in death by her father: Felix Carmack, her husband: Daw Helton, and her brother: Wilt Carmack.

She is survived by her son: Lonnie Helton of Big Creek, her grandsons: Jarrod and Jeffery Helton of Big Creek, her mother: Sally Ann Carmack, and these brother and sisters: Pauline Collett of Sugar Creek, Johnny Reliegh Carmack of Lebanon, TN, Hazel Rojem of Annville, KY, Linda Lou Estep of Sugar Creek, and Bonnie Sue Carmack of Sugar Creek.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Ruth Helton will be Thursday, June 23rd, 2011 at 1 PM at the Rominger Funeral Home Chapel.  Burial will follow in the Estep Cemetery in the Sugar Creek Community.

Visitation will be Wednesday, June 22nd, after 6 PM at the Rominger Funeral Home Chapel.

Phermon Stewart


Phermon Stewart, 69, of Martins Creek, passed away Wednesday at his home.

He was a retired mine foreman.

He is survived by the following children:  Phermon Stewart, Jr., Martins Creek, Joseph Stewart & Patricia Stewart, Both of Manchester

He is also survived by 4 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren & the following brothers and sisters:  Ed Stewart, Jr., Cecil Woodrow Stewart, Edith Mullins, Pauline Stewart, June Smith & Jennie Lee Hubbard, & Eva Collins, All of Martins Creek.

Funeral Service for Phermon Stewart will be held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the Britton Funeral Home Chapel with Charlie Murphy officiating.  Burial will follow at the Walker Cemetery at Martins Creek.

Visitation will be after 6:00 p.m. Friday at the Britton Funeral Home.

Johnny Adams

Johnny Adams, 69, of Horse Creek, the husband of Barbara Adams, passed away Monday at his home.

Funeral services for Johnny Adams will be held Thursday at 2:00 PM at the Smith Hollow Full Faith Holiness Church with Roscoe Roark officiating.  Burial will follow at the Marcum Cemetery at Curry Branch.
