DAV and Clay County Schools Honor Veterans

Veteran’s Day was celebrated all across Clay County Thursday, as schools and local DAV chapter’s paid tribute to those who have fought for our freedom.

Originally known as Armistice or Remembrance Day, the holiday began as the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I, which was formally ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. Now it is used as a day to recognize veterans from all across United States history.

The Clay County High School kicked off Veteran’s Day by hosting a breakfast for local veterans, who were then recognized in the gymnasium by the students, with the CCHS Choir singing God Bless America. Tim Rogers, on behalf of the Board of Education and CCHS thanked the veterans for participating and for their sacrifices for our country.

Also, at the Veterans’ Memorial Park beside the Clay County Administration Building, a troupe of veterans belonging to DAV Chapter 137 paid tribute to Clay County soldiers. Led by Commissioner David Harmon, a US Airforce veteran, performed a 21 gun salute, with fellow veterans Tom Hyden, Arlie Rhodes, R.W. Hensley, Ronald Hornsby, and Shirley Harvey Dezarn.

After the 21 gun salute, the group played taps and stood in attention of the flag. Veterans Day was also recognized at Paces Creek Elementary, where students planted a tree and read poem to recognize Clay Veterans.

The school body gathered around the tree and a moment of silence was held to honor the occasion.
