Junior League Softball Team Returns From World Series

The Clay County Junior League softball team returned to Manchester Sunday night from the World Series in Kirkland, Washington. Several police organizations helped escort the girls home. They rode into town on Manchester Fire Department Ladder truck #1. See the story on page A-4 and see a link to more photos at me.claylive.com including several taken from an Air Evac Helicopter.

Stewart to Appear in Court on Murder Charges

Danny W. Stewart is scheduled to be in Clay Circuit Court Monday August 31 for a review of his murder case. Stewart, age 26 was indicted by a Clay County Grand Jury on charges of murder, robbery (first degree) and burglary (first degree). These charges stem from the October (2013) death of Carl House at his home on Ben House Road. Kentucky State Police Nick Metcalf discovered the victim deceased of an apparent gunshot wound.

The Clay County Little League 14u Softball team has captured the hearts of Kentucky sports fans with a championship in the Junior League Softball Central Regional Tournament at South Holland, Illinois, which is in the suburbs of Chicago. The win put them into the Junior League World Series making them one of the top ten teams in the world!

Thirty Sentenced in Federal Drug Cases

When Terry Smith was sentenced in federal court last week it marked the end of three high profile drug cases that were centered in Clay County. Jimmy Benge and Eugene Slone were also charged with being the head of similar drug rings. All three men were also charged with murder, Smith in the overdose death of Pat Smallwood, while Benge and Slone were charged with having drug informants killed. Benge and Smith have appealed their cases.

Jackson charged with fourth DUI

A Manchester man is facing seven charges including a fourth DUI following a call to Clay 911 of an intoxicated man. James Jackson, age 52 of Couch Road (Manchester) was arrested after he was observed driving drunk by Kentucky State Police trooper Jarrod Smith. Smith checked out the report of an intoxicated male at Relco Plaza on south 421.
