The Clay County Fair Board discussed the possibility of having a small County Fair. The tentative dates of September 10th, 11th and 12th are subject to change.
Justin Combs was introduced Tuesday evening as the new Clay County High School football coach. According to a press release from Clay County School Superintend Amon Couch, “Combs is highly regarded as one of the rising stars in this region as assistant coach.”
Three more Clay County residents have been arrested in a drug ring that stretched from California to Georgia and centered at the home of meth dealer Roy Gibson of Upper Rader.
Gerald Lee (Jerry) Sizemore agreed to plead guilty to new federal charges and avoided a possible death penalty in the Eli Marcum murder case. The new charge of Convicted Felon in Possession of a Firearm was the result of a February (2013) incident when he shot at Reva Hicks. The other charge, Conspiracy to Distribute Oxycodone was listed in previous indictments.
Joshua W. Smith, age 34 of Manchester was arrested in Lexington after evading police in Laurel County. Kentucky State Police Post 11, London was notified by the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office that several deputies had gotten in a pursuit in southern Laurel County. Smith was wanted in Laurel and surrounding counties for several Burglaries, Robberies and Thefts and was operating a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado that had been stolen from Yadens Auto Sales in London. Smith was also known to be armed and had made threats toward law enforcement. Smith successfully managed to evade police in the stolen truck.

The CCHS football hiring committee announced that it had selected CCHS’s next head football call – Coach Justin Combs. Coach Combs is highly regarded as one of the rising stars in this region as assistant coach.
He played for Breathitt County High School under Coach Mike Holcomb when they won the state championship in 2002 and even coached under Holcomb at Breathitt County for three seasons. While coaching defense at BCHS, Coach Combs and the team reaching the Regional Finals all three seasons.
After Breathitt, Coach Combs went to Pike Central to coach under Coach John Paul Chapmman as defensive coordinator. This past year, Coach Combs has served as teacher and defensive coordinator in Magoffin County. As coach, Coach Combs has coached in a regional final game 4 out of 5 years as defensive coach and has coached for teams that have won 4 district titles out of 5 years.
He has a young family and is excited about moving to Clay County and getting plugged into the community. The committee is planning a formal press conference and reception for Coach Combs and his family on Tuesday.
At 9:48 AM on January 1st, Manchester Memorial Hospital (MMH) welcomed its first baby born in 2015. A baby boy, Caleb Dalton Ray, was born to Daniel and Holly Ray. The baby weighed 8lbs, 3oz and measured 21 inches.
Three Clay County residents are scheduled to face a jury trial in Clay Circuit Court Tuesday (January 6).
According to published reports Jimmy D. Benge and Gerald Lee (Jerry) Sizemore have pleaded guilty in federal court and will avoid a possible death penalty.
