Stivers, others working to create EKU endowment scholarship fund in Manchester

One of the biggest challenges for students from Clay and surrounding counties trying to earn a college degree is the needed financial commitment. Eastern Kentucky University Manchester is developing an endowed scholarship fund to assist students locally. The fund is designed to help students who, after receiving other scholarships and paying what they can afford, need some “last dollar” funds to get in or stay in school.

Senate President Robert Stivers, EKU President David McFadden, and Dr. Aaron Thompson, president of the Council of Postsecondary Education, are leading the effort to raise $1.5 million to create the endowment for Manchester’s campus. Supporters who contribute before September 1 will be recognized during a campaign celebration at the EKU Manchester Center at 5 p.m. September 12

“We have already received some significant commitments, but we need more local support to reach our goal,” said Stivers. “I am donating to this personally, and hope others will too so that our next generation locally will have access to higher education and good-paying jobs.“

In addition to major donors already committed, three levels of supporters will be recognized at the September 12 event: Hope Supporters – up to $999, Pioneer Supporters - $1,000-4,900, and Ascent Supporters $5,000-$9,999.

“One and a half million dollars is a big goal, and this is for a good cause that will bring huge benefits to Manchester, Clay County, and our entire region,” Stivers added.
