Alevras Brothers lead Tigers to first win

Clay downs Rowan 28-21

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Clay County secured their first victory of the season after traveling to Rowan County and defeating the Vikings 28-21. This was a total team win for the Tigers, as they had production from all over the roster. Sophomore tailback Drew Alveras led the team with two touchdowns and 97 yards on the ground on 16 carries. Alveras has been a huge boost to the Tiger backfield since returning home, finding the endzone in nearly every game.

Clay County rushed for 217 on the ground while throwing for 76 through the air, as Jayden Woods had an efficient game under center. Woods threw four passes and a touchdown, finding freshman Bill McNamara in the endzone for a 25-yard score. Senior Aiden Wagers also found the endzone, posting a touchdown while rushing for 64 yards on 11 attempts.

Defensively the Tigers played one of their best games this season, highlighted by a big interception from senior DB Stephen Strickland. Luke Alveras, the older brother of Drew, led the team with eight total tackles and one TFL. Weston Bowling and Aiden Wagers had six apiece, while defensive end Jordan Jones and Strickland added five each. Jones also had a crucial sack on the Rowan QB.

Tiger Head Coach Mike Sizemore had high praise for his guys after the victory, and rightfully so. “We were able to go on the road and do the things we needed to do in order to be able to win the game,” said Sizemore. “We had several key plays that stood out for us over the course of the game, including several big runs by Drew Alevras, Aiden Wagers, Jayden Woods, Weston Bowling, and Luke Alevras. We also had some nice catches by Bill McNamara and Aiden Wagers.”

Sizemore continued, “our guys played well against the run on defense to stop them from being able to sustain drives, which was another thing that helped our team pull out the win. We also must credit our guys on the offensive and defensive lines as they were able to control the line of scrimmage throughout the game. We told our kids all week that we were going to go in and execute what we do and win the game fundamentally and that’s what we were able to do.”

As stated above, Jayden Woods is finding his rhythm as a quarterback, and he’s improved every week thus far said Sizemore. “Jayden has improved every week this season at the quarterback spot, he’s always been a threat to score when he touches the ball and now the ball is in his hands every play at quarterback and he has been able to retain that big play ability with his legs while also being able to distribute the football to his teammates. Jayden is doing an excellent job for us, and I think he is becoming more versatile in the things he can do at the quarterback spot from week to week when it comes to getting the ball out and being able to connect on some passes.”
