Posted

The Kentucky State Police continue to investigate a fatal shooting that claimed the life of a Booneville woman Friday afternoon.

According to KSP, troopers were called to a residence on Left Fork Holly Road in Booneville just before 2 p.m. on December 20, 2025, after the Owsley County Sheriff’s Department requested assistance upon discovering a deceased female inside the home.

Troopers, detectives, and the Owsley County Coroner responded to the scene. Preliminary findings indicate that an argument occurred inside the residence between Cloyd Burkhart, 55, formerly of Clay County, and Crystal Sexton, 51, both of Booneville.

Police allege that during the argument, Burkhart fatally shot Sexton. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner.

Burkhart was taken into custody at the residence without incident and lodged in the Three Forks Regional Jail. He is charged with murder, tampering with physical evidence, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The case remains under active investigation and is being led by KSP Detective Casey Caudill, with assistance from Kentucky State Police personnel, the Owsley County Sheriff’s Office, and the Owsley County Coroner’s Office.

Further details are expected to be released as the investigation continues.
