LONDON, Ky. — Federal authorities have charged a Laurel County man with possession with intent to distribute more than 500 grams of methamphetamine following a search of his property that uncovered drugs, pills, and what investigators described as a “cell-like” room.
According to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court, DEA agents and Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies went to the Southern Oakes Road property of Scottie Shelton on Aug. 12 in an attempt to speak with him about ongoing drug trafficking investigations. Behind the main residence, officers found a white metal structure identified as Shelton’s residence.
Agents reported smelling a strong odor similar to a decaying body. A source later told investigators that Shelton had built a jail cell on the second floor of the structure and had once shown photos of a restrained woman inside.
Deputies said Shelton consented to a search after being told about the odor. Inside, they found an upstairs room resembling a torture chamber, with handcuffs, rope, and other devices, along with numerous firearms. A deer carcass was located in another room. In the garage area, officers noticed freshly disturbed dirt. While digging, they found what appeared to be a human bone, prompting deputies to secure the scene and obtain a search warrant.
During a post-Miranda interview, Shelton admitted that around 2020 he had buried eight kilograms of meth and an unknown number of pills in the garage. He told agents he recently recovered the drugs and had been distributing them and using them himself.
Following a search consistent with Shelton’s directions, investigators recovered about 6,000 pills resembling 30-milligram Oxycodone tablets and roughly 1,200 grams of methamphetamine.
Shelton is charged with possession with intent to distribute a methamphetamine mixture, a violation of 21 U.S.C. § 841(a)(1). The case is being handled in the Eastern District of Kentucky.
