New training facility is a game changer

Posted

MANCHESTER, Ky. – Hello, everyone! This rainy Sunday afternoon has me stuck inside and counting down the days until sports are back in full swing. I know many of you have already seen the announcement from the Clay County Board of Education about the purchase of property and existing buildings this past week. One building will house the maintenance department, while the other is expected to become a new training facility for Clay County athletes.

Personally, I think that's tremendous news for our student-athletes.

I played at Clay County High School from 2009 to 2014, and we didn't have anything remotely close to what today's athletes have available. Every generation should have more opportunities than the one before it, and that's exactly what this investment represents. Our student-athletes will have another tool to help them become the best versions of themselves while working toward a common goal of making Clay County athletics stronger across the board.

Over the past several years, we've seen steady improvements in our athletic facilities and equipment. Those upgrades have helped put our program’s facilities on par with some of the best around the state. This new training facility has the chance to be another major step in that direction with what goes on the field.

As excited as I am about the facility itself, what I really want to see is for it to be used to its fullest potential. When I attend regional events, one thing stands out to me almost immediately. Athletes from many surrounding counties simply look more physically developed than they did years ago. That's no accident. They've had access to training facilities, strength equipment and year-round development that helps prepare them to compete at a higher level.

You can see the difference when the games begin. Whether it's on the football field, basketball court, baseball diamond or softball field, stronger, faster and more athletic players give their teams a better chance to succeed. More importantly, the discipline and work ethic developed through that kind of training carry over long after the final whistle. Building better athletes also helps build better young adults.

What excites me most about this project is that it isn't designed for just one sport. It's meant to benefit every student-athlete in Clay County.

It's no secret that smaller rural communities face challenges because of declining participation numbers. Here in Clay County, many of our best athletes compete in multiple sports throughout the year. Giving those young men and women a place where they can consistently develop their strength, speed and athleticism could pay dividends across every Tiger program.

For me, that's what makes this investment so exciting. Other communities have spent years investing in athletic development, and in many ways, they've passed us by. This new facility gives Clay County an opportunity to start closing that gap. A building by itself won't win games, but the athletes who dedicate themselves inside it just might. I hope our students embrace that opportunity, because I truly believe this facility can help shape the future of Clay County athletics for years to come.
