Scam attempt foiled, one jailed

CLAY COUNTY, Ky. — Clay County Sheriff Patrick Robinson says his office is sending a clear message to scammers: if you prey on local families, you will be caught.

On Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2025, deputies arrested 21-year-old Danil Dovzhuk of Loveland, Ohio, after he allegedly attempted to scam a local woman out of thousands of dollars and then showed up at her home pretending to be law enforcement.

Deputy Sgt. Wes Brumley was first alerted when the victim reported receiving threatening calls claiming she would be charged with crimes unless she handed over money. During one call, Brumley overheard a male voice instructing her to go home, wait until no one was around, and that he would “come by.”

Later that day, Clay County 911 reported that Dovzhuk had arrived at the victim’s residence, only to be confronted by family members before fleeing in a blue SUV. Sgt. Brumley intercepted the suspect at the junction of U.S. 421 and U.S. 11, where he was driving a vehicle marked “Police Interceptor” that appeared to be an unmarked law enforcement car.

With the assistance of Manchester Police Officers Derrick Carr and John Root, Brumley detained the suspect. The victim’s son soon arrived on scene and reported that the scammer had already taken a substantial sum of money.

Dovzhuk was arrested and charged with:

  • Theft by Deception $10,000 or More
  • Impersonating a Peace Officer

Sheriff Robinson said the case is a reminder that scammers are becoming bolder, but law enforcement is equally determined to stop them.
“This arrest shows that anyone who comes into Clay County to take advantage of our people will be tracked down and held accountable,” Robinson said.

The investigation remains ongoing.
