Search Ongoing for Missing High School Football Coach Amid Criminal Investigation

The search continues for Union High School head football coach Travis Turner, who disappeared just as his undefeated team entered the postseason. Turner, a well-known figure in the Big Stone Gap, Virginia community, is wanted on ten felony charges — five counts of possessing child sexual abuse material and five counts of using a computer to solicit a minor. Authorities say additional charges are expected as the investigation progresses.

Virginia State Police obtained the arrest warrants shortly after Turner vanished. According to his family, Turner was last seen on November 20 walking into a wooded, mountainous area near his home while carrying a firearm. The family said this behavior was out of character and expressed fear for his safety. While the family released these details, state police have not confirmed the information regarding the firearm.

Law enforcement has carried out a large-scale search using drones, K-9 teams, and ground crews, but days of searching have produced no sign of the coach. Officials say they do not believe the community is in danger at this time, but Turner is considered a fugitive because he has not been located or contacted authorities.

Turner’s disappearance has deeply shaken the Wise County school community. The school district placed him on administrative leave, removed him from the school website, and barred him from school property or contact with students. The case has also revived memories of a previous scandal: a different Union High assistant coach was charged in 2023 with child-sex–related offenses, a case that left lasting wounds in the community.

Despite the turmoil, the Union High Bears have continued their undefeated season under interim leadership. The team secured a 21–14 victory over Ridgeview High School to win the regional championship and advance to the state semifinals. Turner’s son, a former quarterback at Union, described the win as “bittersweet” for the family, acknowledging the emotional strain surrounding his father’s disappearance.

As the investigation expands, authorities urge anyone with information about Turner’s whereabouts to contact Virginia State Police. The family continues to ask for prayers and has expressed hope that Turner will be found alive and given the chance to defend himself in court.
