CORBIN- Defense is the name of the game, and the South Laurel Lady Cardinals know how to play it. South cruised to an opening round win over the Clay County Lady Tigers xx-xx in the 13th region tournament.
A smothering full-court press gave the Lady Tigers fits all night long. Clay committed 21turnovers.
The second half was much like the first, with South scoring fast and often and the Lady Tigers committing too many turnovers.
Just like in the 49th championship game, Clay collapsed in the third quarter. South went on a 15-3 run midway through to go ahead by 30 at 55-25. The running clock kicked in with just under two minutes to play at 61-25 on a three-pointer by Maci Messer.
Leading scorer Maci White made her return to the court in limited action over four quarters. But this night belonged to South from the opening tip. The Lady Cardinals jumped out to a quick 16-5 lead and never looked back.
They entered the second quarter ahead 18-9. South opened the quarter on a 9-0 run to jump ahead 27-9. Harper Rice scored seven points in the quarter, and White added two as their team trailed 36-20 going into halftime.
Clay County has not had a winning record since the COVID-shortened 20-21 season, when they finished 13-9. It was also their last appearance in the 13th region tournament until this year.
Rice led Clay in scoring with 13, Carly Fultz seven, Madison Pendland four, Lauryn Sizemore three, Maci White two.
The Lady Tigers finish the season at 16-17 with four starters returning.
