Freeman J. “Sonnie” Shelton, age 80 departed this life on Sunday, March 17, 2024 at the Paul Patton Eastern Kentucky Veterans Center in Hazard, Kentucky. He was born on Friday, September 17, 1943 in Reform, Alabama to Freeman Shelton, II and Maudeal Junkin Shelton. He was the owner and operator of 33 Pizza Hut Restaurants, 3 Sonics, a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge, a Shriner, a member of the Jesters of Lexington, Ducks Unlimited, a member of the New Beginnings Community Church and he was a veteran of the United States Air Force.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife of 37 happy years: Bernice “Bea” Smith Shelton, his daughter: Sissy Shelton Young, his son: Jason Smith and wife Ginger as well as his grandchildren: Weston Poynter, Gentry Young, Taylor Smith, Chastin Young, Trevor Smith and Tristan Smith. Also surviving are his siblings: Frank Shelton and Melanie of Frankfort, Kentucky, Rita Clemmons and Ricky of Dallas, Georgia, Butch Shelton and Delynn of Alabama, Sandra Shirley of Reform, Alabama, Fred Shelton and Suzie of Reform, Alabama and Bud Shelton and Kim of Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

He is preceded in death by his parents: Freeman Shelton, II and Maudeal Shelton, his daughter: Amy Lou Shelton, his brother: Floyd Lee Shelton and his grandfather: Freeman Shelton.

There is not enough paper to tell of the places Sonnie has seen and the things he accomplished in his time on earth. He lived a life people only dream of and he led and directed a wonderful, loving family where no one was ever overlooked in their time of need and he always made time to sit and talk to friends and family.

Funeral Services for Sonnie Shelton will be conducted on Thursday, March 21, 2024 at 7 PM at the New Beginnings Community Church. Rev. Bobby Stevens will be presiding. The family will receive friends and loved ones after 5 PM on Thursday evening at the New Beginnings Community Church.
