Woman Critically Injured in Officer-Involved Shooting in Knox County

May 01, 2025

GREEN ROAD, Ky. — A woman was critically injured during an officer-involved shooting Monday night in the Green Road community of Knox County, according to Kentucky State Police (KSP).

Authorities said KSP Post 10 in Harlan received a call for assistance from Knox County Dispatch at 10:14 p.m. on April 29 regarding a developing incident on Sugar Maple Drive. Troopers and detectives responded immediately and launched an investigation.

Preliminary findings reveal that deputies with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office were responding to a call about a woman reportedly barricaded in her home and making suicidal threats. When deputies arrived and attempted to make contact, the woman—identified as 53-year-old Daisy Allen—sprayed them with an unknown substance, affecting all three deputies on scene.

Deputies attempted to subdue Allen using non-lethal means, including a taser and pepper spray, but were unsuccessful. Police said Allen then threatened to kill the deputies and armed herself with a pitchfork. One deputy, perceiving an immediate threat to their safety, discharged their service weapon, striking Allen in the abdomen.

Allen was transported to the University of Kentucky’s Albert B. Chandler Hospital, where she remains in critical condition. None of the deputies were physically injured during the confrontation, although all required decontamination and medical attention for exposure to the unknown substance.

The Barbourville City Police Department also responded to the scene to assist.

The investigation is being led by KSP Sergeant Sturgill. As part of its standard procedures, KSP investigates officer-involved shootings across the state when requested. Officials said that to preserve the integrity of the case, specific details will not be released until all key witnesses have been interviewed and the facts thoroughly reviewed. The length of the investigation will depend on the complexity of the case.

KSP emphasized its commitment to transparency and thoroughness in all officer-involved shooting investigations.
