In Loving Memory of Hazel Murphy Slusher:
Our beautiful and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Hazel Murphy Slusher, age 89, of Garland, Texas, formerly of Manchester, Kentucky, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
Hazel was the oldest daughter born on June 11, 1937, in Manchester, Kentucky to the late Charlie Murphy & Mae Mills Murphy, and late Frances Carpenter Murphy (Momma).
Hazel leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory: her daughter, Gail Slusher Mixon, and son-in-law, Larry Mixon; grandsons, Christopher Mixon and Matthew Mixon and his wife, Maria Mixon; and her great-grandson, Lion Mixon, Baby Liam Mixon will be arriving soon by 9/28.
She is also survived by her siblings, Charlie Murphy Jr. and his wife, Carolyn Murphy; Oma Smallwood; Lillie Hibbard; Frances Wagers; and Charlene Murphy, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends who loved her dearly.
Hazel was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wilford Slusher; her precious oldest son, Wilford Slusher Jr.; and her precious youngest son, Charles Joshua Slusher. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Jimmy Murphy, and sisters, Ruby Murphy, Ninnie Hornsby, and Mary Murphy.
Hazel gave her life to God at the age of 18. From that day forward, she devoted her life to her faith and to serving her Lord. Her faith was not simply something she spoke about—it was the foundation of the life she lived. She raised her family in church, shared her testimony with everyone she met, and continually gave God the glory for the blessings in her life. Her children and grandchildren learned about God by watching her live out her faith each and every day.
Hazel was a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, and cherished great-grandmother. Her family was her greatest joy. She loved her children and grandchildren with all her heart and was incredibly proud of each of them. She was a homemaker who worked tirelessly to build a loving home, while also becoming a dedicated and hardworking employee throughout her life. No matter where she worked, Hazel gave her very best. She was known for her strong work ethic, kindness, dedication, and determination.
Throughout her working years, Hazel held many jobs and touched countless lives. Her first job was at Walgreens, followed by Porter Ely, Henny Penny, Bert Lyttle Restaurant, Burns Restaurant, Goose Rock Elementary as a kindergarten aide, KCEOC as a social worker, Maloney's, Save-A-Lot, and Walmart.
Hazel spent a remarkable 35 years with Walmart, working at Walmart in Manchester, Kentucky; Walmart in London, Kentucky; and Walmart Store #1055 in Garland, Texas. She received numerous regional awards and recognitions for her outstanding sales and dedication, particularly for her beautiful flower arrangements, balloons, and creative “gift in the balloon” displays.
Hazel was honored to attend a Walmart event in Bentonville, Arkansas, where she was recognized and interviewed for her 35 years with the company and for continuing to work at Walmart at the age of 85. In November 2024, Hazel officially retired. Her fellow associates honored her with a sign that read, “The Legend Has Retired.” It was a beautiful and fitting tribute to a woman whose dedication and work ethic had inspired so many.
In 1997, Hazel moved to Dallas, Texas, to live with her daughter and family. She cherished every moment she had with them and continued to be the loving center of her family.
Hazel's life was a testimony of faith, perseverance, hard work, love, and devotion. She never lost her faith in God. She continually lifted His name and gave Him praise for the life He had given her. She knew that when her time on this earth was finished, she would be welcomed into the arms of her Savior.
For 89 years, God blessed us with Hazel. We thank Him for every day He allowed her to be our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. A wonderful daughter, sister and cousin! Though our hearts are broken and we will miss her more than words can express, we find comfort knowing that she is now home with her Lord and reunited with those she loved who went before her.
We love you, Mom. We miss you, Mom. Thank you, God, for giving us the best Mom and Grandmother in the world.
Until we see you again, Mom, we will hold your love in our hearts and carry your faith with us. And one glorious day, we will join you on that Glad Reunion Day.
Rest peacefully, Mom. Your work on earth is finished. Your faith is now sight.
