Imogene (Hammons) Elkins

Posted

Imogene (Hammons) Elkins, daughter of the late Alfred and Martha (Root) Hammons, was born December 8, 1939, in Clay County, Kentucky. She was united in marriage to James Elkins, who survives of London, Kentucky, sharing 72 wonderful years of marriage, a true testament to their love and devotion.

She is survived by her children: Patty Proffitt and husband Stanley, Mark Elkins and wife Michelle, all of London, Kentucky; Mike Elkins and husband Michael and Danny Elkins, all of Lexington, Kentucky. She is also survived by her sister, Pearlie Whitaker of Manchester, Kentucky; and her sister-in-law, Pearl Bowling of London, Kentucky and by her trusty companion, Precious Elizabeth.

Imogene was blessed with fifteen grandchildren: Jara Burkhart, Jennifer Lawson, Kacey Bolton, Stacey Cole, Noah Elkins, Christopher Elkins, Ethan Elkins, Dylan Elkins, Nathan Elkins, Sammie Jo Proffitt, Timmy Proffitt, Shannon Proffitt, Stephanie Proffitt, Tim Proffitt, and Kendall Proffitt; and twenty-five great-grandchildren, whom she dearly loved.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Donna Fredricks and twelve siblings.

Imogene was a skilled cabinet maker at the family business for over 20 years. Her hard work and steady hands helped build more than furniture, they built a legacy. She loved a full house and took great joy in gathering family and friends, especially her children and grandchildren. A fun-loving and devoted Mamaw, she created countless cherished memories through “junking” trips, shopping adventures, sleepovers, time spent in her home, and the comfort of her home-cooked meals.

She enjoyed decorating, collecting antiques, and took great pride in herself and in her home, always making it warm and welcoming. Imogene was known for her humor and love of storytelling, brightening every gathering. Even in her final days, she continued to think of others, offering smiles, love, and warmth until the very end.

Imogene (Hammons) Elkins departed this life on Monday, January 5, 2026, at the age of 86 years and 28 days of age.
