David Wayne Hensley David Wayne Hensley

David Wayne Hensley, age 75 of London, Ky departed his earthly life and went to his eternal home in heaven on Friday, March 15, 2024. David was born on January 8, 1949 to the union of Gertrude Tipton Hensley and Elmer “Blue” Hensley. On June 21, 1968, David married the love of his life, Rita Day Hensley. In April of 1974 his first child, a green-eyed baby boy, Neil Bradley was born. On January 8, 1979, his daughter, Ashley Brooke was born and according to David was “the best birthday gift he ever received”. He was also delighted that he shared a birthday with Elvis Presley.

David is also survived by his son in law, Bill Hensley, four grandchildren, Anna Hensley, Laine Hensley, Trey Hensley and Reed Hensley. He is survived by three siblings, Larry Hensley of Manchester, Ky, Barbara Fields and husband Donnie of Manchester, Ky, Donna White and husband Doug of London, Ky. and a brother-in-law, Doug George of London, Ky; plus a host of other family and friends to mourn his passing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gertrude and Elmer and a loving sister, Jeannie Hensley George.

He worked hard his entire life. From his early years working at Little Joe’s Market and then serving in the U.S. Army Reserve, he went on to become a teacher at the old Bush Elementary. He remained in that position for 20 years before becoming principal at North Laurel Middle School. David had a positive impact on the lives of so many young people and had true compassion for them. After his retirement in 2012, David continued to work hard. He was able to devote himself full time to farming where he tirelessly worked and enjoyed the outdoors. David also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

Though most only saw the serious side of David, he also had a much lighter side. He enjoyed telling ghost stories to his grandkids, pulling pranks in his younger days, and had a love for music, so much that he might even break into dance when you least expected it. Some of his happiest times were spent tailgating with friends at U.K. football games and having cookouts with family. He enjoyed evenings at home, drinking coffee and watching news shows with Rita. David was humble. He never thought, nor wanted to give the impression, that he was better than anyone else. He knew the struggles and challenges of life and knew he was blessed.

Most importantly, David was a Godly man. He attended church faithfully at Providence Baptist Church where he loved bringing joy to others by being Santa Claus each year at Christmas. His love for God was apparent when you heard his prayers. David had a true love for people and his family meant the world to him. We know heaven is a better place because he is there.
